You Can Only Do So Much…

Dear, College Girl,

You can only do so much.

Ever since grade school, we were taught to plan to fail versus failing to plan. What this means is, that when you are on your A-game, you should expect your results to be nothing but excellence. While we should uphold our tasks to completion and excellence, it is also true that sometimes things in life do not work out according to our desire. It so not because we are not working hard enough. Have you ever thought that the very steps you are taking could mean nothing and the results you aspire to are not alive because you are actually….doing too much?

What if God wants you to sit back and relax?

As someone who struggles with sitting back and relaxing, I can attest to this. It hurts to sit back and relax because I will indeed find something to do. I will be writing, cleaning, reading, studying, drawing, taking a walk, going to the gym, dancing, singing, working, planning, and doing everything but nothing. Rest is a privilege, not a reward. Rest is a must, a necessity, and something you are obligated to do. Outworking ourselves to the point of fatigue is not something to be proud of but something to be worried about.

Have you ever heard of the phrase, “work smart, not hard.” That is the energy we should be aligning ourselves with. It should hurt you to know that you are not navigating your circumstances strategically and instead exerting your energy to space that extract. An example of this is babysitting a child who does not listen. You may tell him to sit down one too many times and he still will not sit. You know that you just want to protect him but he does not see it that way. In fact, he does not care to see that you just want to help him. He only understands you to be a nagging adult. The more you tell him to sit, the more he thinks it’s funny enough to not listen. So why continue to tell him to sit? Why not use the 3 times rule and put him in time-out?

Use your resources wisely. I always encourage wise counsel as a resource. I am grateful to have a wise counsel who encourages me to relax and think my options through. Because I am such a planner, I also expect things to happen at a certain time. When that does not fall through, I reroute. When there is no reroute….well, the wise counsel was right. Sit down!

You can only put so much out into the universe. Your resting does not make you lazy. You resting, does not mean you have no drive or ambitions. Your resting does not mean you are not lovable. You resting, does not mean you will no longer achieve your dreams. Your resting, means “I am giving myself the space and the time to rejuvenate. What is for me will find me and will fall through.” So to the college girl who has not landed a job yet, all will be well. Be patient, be persistent, and do what you can. If you know your resume is top-notch, you have made the calls, you have slayed the interviews, you have overused your resources at this point and nothing is falling through, please know that you did enough. You are also a human being with feelings.

There is only so much you can do.

Sincerely,

Pitra
